    Bon bit me (not feeling so blue any more!)

    First let me say he did NOT attack me, I just got in the middle of a fight.

    As most of you know I've been feeding raw for the last 10 months.
    In the very beginning I had a small problem with Bon wanting to take Huney's food, but since then things were going well...that is until yesterday.

    I guess you could say it was all my fault. I should have left well enough alone.

    Huney didn't take her food when I gave it to her so I went ahead and gave Roxey her food, then gave Bon his. A little bit later Huney came up on the porch so I offered her food to her again and this time she took it. Bon seen us and left his food and came running up to us.

    From there it's all kind of a blur, it happened so fast but here's what I remember...

    One of them growled. I have no idea who started it, but they started fighting. Of course I know I shouldn't have gotten in between them but instead pulled Bon's legs out from under him, but at that moment all I could think of was to get him off her. I grabbed his collar and tried to pull him off her. Next thing going through my head is "I think he bit me."
    I finally got him off her and into a corner and had him in a head lock trying to calm him down. For some reason Huney came over to us and got right under his legs This I don't understand at all.
    I finally got her away from us and walked him out to the kennel and locked him up and brought Huney in the house.
    At this time I realize blood is pouring down my leg and I'm trying to figure out what to do. I looked down and not only do I have punctures but there was fatty tissue hanging out of one of them
    I get the phone, get into the tub and call Mark and he came home and took me to the hospital.

    Do you know how embarrassing it is to tell people that your dog bit you? It made me just want to cry. I know this is bad but I just kept thinking "Angus never bit me."

    The doctor was shocked when she seen my leg and said it was impressive. I'm definitely not impressed with it

    I did have to get a tetanus shot, intravenous antibiotics and a total of 6 stitches. She said she really didn't like to put stitches in bites but the punctures were just too big not put a few in. I wasn't at the hospital long, around 3 hours or so and now I'm off work till Tuesday.
    She sent me home with a prescription for Augmentin and Vicodin for pain (not that it really helps much.) I go to have the stitches out in 10 days. Until then I'm to rest and keep my leg elevated.

    The dogs are getting along just fine now, as if nothing ever happened. I fed the girls outside as usual and fed Bon in his crate.

    Now I feel like I'm nervous about everything and feel like just going back to dry dog food, but who knows...will they fight over that too

    I told my mom and now she's worried about me because Bon is so big. She's afraid something will happen to me. I tried to calm her by telling her that his aggression wasn't directed towards me but it didn't seem to make her feel any better.
    I don't want to tell any fiends or family for the fear that they will not want to come over any more and think I have a "viscous" dog although I did tell the girl who dog sat for me and she stopped by last night to see me and the dogs, it didn't seem to phase her at all. She said she isn't afraid to watch them any more now than before...that made me feel good

    My leg looks absolutely terrible. I'm going to attach some pictures, so if your grossed out by things like this don't look
    All the pictures were taken after I got to the hospital.
    1)Before anything was done to it.
    2)After the stitches
    3)Gross pic but it shows the difference in size of my legs
    4)My leg this morning...yuck, it looks like a whale

    I wanted to tell this story to let everyone know that dogs are still dogs. Just try to not make the same mistake I did. Think before you step between two dogs, even if they are your own.

    That looks SO painful!!!

    Maybe start feeding them at different times/different rooms so that this won't happen again.

    Our goal in life should be - to be as good a person as our dog thinks we are.

    I'm so sorry, Anna!! How awful for all of you. This must have been the scariest thing ever. I would have reacted exactly like you did I'm sure. At times like this, you do whatever you feel is best at the time. It happens so fast, there's no time to think of possible consequences.

    I hope you get better and the dogs will be okay and have no more problems. {{{{{{{HUGS}}}}}}}

    OMG Anna... I'm sitting here with my jaw dropped!!!
    I don't even know what to say....

    I'm so sorry it happened, when things like that happen, all you think about is stopping them from fighting.. it's just a reaction. We all know we shouldn't get in between dogs.. but when they are your own your first instant is to stop them before they hurt (or worse) each other. How is Huney??

    Oh Anna.. I can't even begin to imagine how much flipping pain you are in. I can't get over how much of your leg is bruised.
    I hope you heal fast, physically and mentally.

    OMG Anna that looks painfull . Lots of healing vibes coming your way {{Hugs}}. We had a couple of dog fights whilst we were away, so i can sympathise with you.

    If feeding RAW is working for your guys then i would stick to it, just keep a close eye on them at dinner time and watch for any warning signs.

    Oh Anna! I hope you feel better soon, that looks just awful .
    That must have been really frightening. It is so hard to know what to do when your own dogs get into a fight. You just automatically step in (even though it's not a good idea) and try to separate them, I've done it before, too. But you're right, when those instincts kick in, the last place you want to be is between them.
    Poor Huney, is she ok? She probably ran under Bon's legs just to be closer to you, she's so attached to you. I know Bon is a big sweetie, but gosh, he is such a powerful dog. It could have been much worse.
    Prayers for a quick recovery, and (((hugs))) to you , Huney, Roxey, and Bon. We love you guys!

    Guess who's NAW-Tee Dog of the Day!?

    <gasp>

    OUWIE!!
    {{Hugs}}}

    OMG!
    NAW-Tee Dawg, Bon!!

    Who knows what goes through their minds when stuff like this happens?

    The Dogs probably aren't even sure they did anything wrong ...
    "WHY did Silly Mom stick her leg-bone in my mouth??"

    And heck, a few Byte Marks will add a Lotta "Character" to that plain ole leg!

    No matter what you give him for food - may be time to start a
    NILIF program ... SIT, then give him ONE small Byte by hand;
    and repaet for the WHOLE meal.

    Sure Hope your poor leg heals up without any pain or complications!

    More {{{HUGS}}}!

    Oh my goodness Anna! That looks so painful. It made me say Ouch aloud here in the office.

    I have had to seperate my dogs from fighting before and have done the same thing you have done. I know you went by instinct without even thinking about your own safety. You just wanted to make sure your dogs were okay.

    I hope the pain mediciation is working for you and that you get to feeling better.

    That does look painful!Much more worse then mine was.

    I hope you heal up fast!

    I too have the same problem in my household.Lacy is such a food agressive(with the other dogs)Her and Molly fight all the time and i used to step in.I did not want to see any of the hurt,Molly grabbed a hold of my hand one time just enought to leave a mark.It was my fault i jumped in and tried to stop the fight.

    I had to take Molly into the vet her ear was ripped open and she needed stiches as well as Lacy.

    The vet said to me never to jump in let them fight it out.I still find it impossible to do.My husband has war wounds from this too.

    But as you i do not think any less of my dogs,It would be different if they walked up to me and bit me for no reason,But i have just caught them off guard.

    Take it easy and stay off that leg as much as possible!

    Oh honey. Your leg is painful just to look at. I am so sorry that this
    happened to you. Sounds like Huney came to you out of fear or for protection. It might be better to feed Bon separately from now on. What
    does Mark think about all this? Please take it easy & heal up quickly.
