A Colour Lesson

I thought it would be interesting if we could post all of the colours of our favourite breed!
Here are the colours of Belgian shepherds!

First of course you have the groenendael. You can have a pure groenendael (can ONLY produce groenendael no matter what, like Visa, Isis, and Spirit). You can have a groenendael that carries fawn/grey (like Loki, and maybe Jaguar, Solo, and Jake -- can't tell with them). Or you can have the more rare recessive black which is a groenendael born out of two tervuren which can produce both groenendael and tervuren.
Visa -- black, will produce only black.

Loki -- black, will produce black, red, and grey (not all groenendael who carry tervuren can produce grey, but Loki can). Loki has alot of red in his hair which is typical of alot of groenendael who have a tervuren parent (his father is a terv).

Here is a groenendael born out of tervuren parents. They are born looking like dark tervuren but eventually turn black.

Now the tervuren. The two basic colours of tervuren are red and grey.

Then of course there are literally hundreds of other genes that determine markings and shadings but we won't get into that.

boy this could get long for my breed lol

BCs come in almost every colour of the rainbow, though a majority of people have no idea that come in anything other the black and white lol

first we have tris, the tri marking can come with pretty much any of the colours

the most common tris are Black tri

and red tris

blues are rare on their own, but they often have the tri markings

tri merles are often marked as only being merle.

there is even a lilac tri

everyone knows about the typical black and white,

but they can be white and black as well(also known as patterned white)

Blue is diluted black, and often barly noticable until placed next to an real black. this dog is a more obvious blue

blue merle is a very common colour in the sport world, people love it

probably the absolute least known about colour in the breed in Brindle. the colour is very rarly found all over the dog like this one

but what IS common is brindle on a tri, I know lots of BCs who tri markings are actually brindle rather then tan

Lilac is extremly uncommon, and is known as a double dilute(both brown and blue at the same time)

red and white is not common, but loved by almost everyone lol

though your red merles dont tend to be as coveted, red merls owners are often forever explain that yes, it is a pure BC lol

they even come in sable

and no, a saddle pattern does not alwasy indicate GSD lol

a term commonly heard in the breed is Aussie red, in Australia dark red is called chocolate, and what we call yellow or tan, is what they call "red"

and the boggest mistake I constaly hear, is people thinking their dog MUST be mixed with cattledog, because they have ticking. TONS of BCs have ticking it is not even remotly rare lol

I can add my breed; it is pretty easy.

Bichons are white. Period.

This is my Sugar.

They get interesting in the variety of cuts you can choose.

While the breed standard only allows shades of red and orange (for appropriate reason), Tollers can also come in the following (none are very common though):

Also, red Tollers can have either black or flesh coloured pigment (varying between shades of pink and liver).

Greys come in almost every color/marking imaginable besides Tri's and Black and Tans.

A short list off the top of my head:
Red
Fawn
White
Black
Brindle
Black and white
Red and white
Fawn and white
Brindle and white
Any color + white
Blue (Greyhounds come in blue, not grey)
Dark brindle
Light brindle
White and ticked with various colors

I believe I even saw a chocolate Greyhound, but I can't seem to find a picture of one. It could have been a dark red, though.

Again, Pekes come in all colors. All that is required is black eye rims and lips and nose. My personal fave is a creamy off-white with a black muzzle and tips on the eyebrows:

The two accepted colors for Dalmatians are black and white and liver and white. These are caused by a simple dominant vs. recessive gene. Black always masks liver. Two (black) dogs with the same phenotype (they look the same) can carry different genes.

It is noted as BB for a dog that can not pass on anything but black, and Bb for a dog that is capible of passing either a liver gene or a black gene. In dals it is usually called liver factored.
Liver is recessive and the dog must not carry and black genes in order for it to show.

Other recorded colors are lemon, orange, blue, brindle, and tricolor.
I know that blue is caused by a dilution of black and tricolor has to do with masking. Here is a website that covers the genetics better than I can:
