Andrea, the first named storm of the 2007 hurricane season, continues to weaken off the Southeast Coast.

At 5 p.m. EDT, the center of Subtropical Depression Andrea was located near 29.6 N, 79.8 W, or about 90 miles east-southeast of St. Augustine, Fla. and about 95 miles north-northeast of Cape Canaveral, Fla.

The storm continues to move rather erratically southward and will likely remain offshore through Friday. Maximum sustained winds remain near 35 mph and further weakening is expected over the next 24 hours.

The storm weakening is being caused by drier stable air being pulled into the system, increasing wind shear pushing the last remaining thunderstorms away from the center and still relative cool ocean water temperatures. It may not survive the day as a depression and become just a remnant low pressure center later tonight or early on Friday.

Even with the weaker state of the system, numerous high surf advisories and offshore small craft warnings remain in effect along the Atlantic coast of northeastern Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.

Coastal residents and visitors should not go swimming in the Atlantic as dangerous surf and extreme riptide currents are likely. Mariners should stay in port as offshore gale force wind gust and high waves are still likely in exposed, open waters.

WeatherBug Live Tracking Stations are reporting winds gust in excess of 20 mph along the coast of South Carolinas and Georgia. The links to the right of this story will take you to reports from these live weather stations.

A subtropical system exhibits both tropical and mid-latitude characteristics, including a distinctive central core, no fronts and maximum winds away from the low pressure center. These uncommon systems sometimes form, like this one, just off the Southeast Coast from a stalled cut-off frontal system. The last subtropical system formed southeast of Bermuda in October 2005.

Be sure to keep WeatherBug active in your system tray in order to receive the latest information on this developing subtropical system.

Yeah, it just died. The hurricane just died. All that is left is a pile of clouds.
