Woman sick after eating tainted pet food

Woman eats dog food, foams at mouth
    [United Press International]

OTTAWA, March 27 (UPI) -- An Ottawa woman trying to trick her terrier into trying a new kind of food ate it herself and developed symptoms, including foaming at the mouth, of illness.

The stunt-gone-wrong began earlier in the month before a North American recall of moist pet foods was issued, but Elaine Larabie suspects she and her new 1-year-old pet, Missy fell victim to tainted food, the Ottawa Citizen reported Tuesday.

She said once her dog started eating the food, she stopped, but both fell ill, and for three days she experienced foaming at the mouth, problems urinating, vomiting and loss of appetite.

The dog required veterinary care but will recover. Larabie is awaiting lab results from her hospitalization, the newspaper said.

Larabie said when she contacted Iams, the company confirmed the food she and the dog ate was affected by the recall and likely was contaminated with rodent-killing chemical sprayed on Chinese wheat. She said the company assured her they will cover her medical bills and she hasn't decided yet whether to sue, the Citizen said.

I don't think it was that... the article states that it was done a month before the recall?

The dog was smart by not wanting to eat that crap!

LOL that's what I was thinking. Does she really think her dog is that dumb LOL "oh if she eats it then it must be great." Oh man that's something else.

Could you imagine telling that to the Dr.... "Yes Doc... I believe I have ingested the tainted dog food..... well I was trying to fool my dog into eating it of COURSE."

Here is my general rule.... If even my DOG won't eat it.... it is not meant to be eaten... by anyone. lol

I do hope she gets better though

I don't know about Canada, but in the United States of America, it's fairly common for poor people to eat pet food because they can't afford human food. But it's not often they'll admit it, because they're afraid of ridicule or pity.

well it doesn't sound like this was the case.... it is one thing to eat for survival... but to try to trick your dog into eating somethign it doesn't want? You would think that if you dog didn't want it.... perhaps it might not be very good.

It shouldn't matter whether we try our dogs food or not - it should be safe enough for us to eat, no matter what brand it is.

I wasn't there, so I can't know, but I'm guessing that perhaps this might just have been her story so as not to have to admit that she was eating dog food for sustenance. You'd be surprised how many people will eat pet food or garbage before accepting charity - it's a deeply ingrained value for some people. But since "never accept charity" is a matter of false pride - maintaining a certain face to the outer world - getting caught eating pet food would be worth fibbing about too, since it would mean that you'd committed the equally egregious misdeed of failing to provide adequately for yourself.

It's a fading and little-understood ethic, but it's still around.

Okay this has me thinking! Why would you choose to eat dog food, when for the same price or less you can buy real canned Human food??? Dog food isnt exactly cheap! I mean a can of Raviolis is cheaper than a can of dog food!
