Best Friends - good guys or bad guys?

While reading an article about the PETA employee trial on VetPet Digest, I saw this link to articles on Best Friends. The poster who gave them was making a point that we should investiage even the most revered animal welfare societies before we donate to them. Here are the links:

I didn't much admire the style of the articles but they do seem to involve a lot of research. I also think it's possible, even probable, that people in their early years get involved in idealistic and strange concerns that they would later reject. But, the articles did make me concerned. What do others think of the articles, and of the Best Friends Society?

I couldn't even read the first half the first link. The writing style was scattered and had a tabloid feel to it. I think one or two odd people don't make for an organization of thousands into a bad organization. Now PETA has a much higher percentage of nutcases to its name.

so the 3rd link says 76% of the funds raised goes into animal care, the highest paid reported board member makes $ 63,000. well that doesn't strike me as a badly run organization. i'll continue my donation.
