A day at the zoo, pics included

Joe, his kids & I went to the Seneca Park Zoo (Rochester, NY) yesterday thanks to his father who gave us free tickets. We all had a good time, except half way through my batteries died. I managed to get a few decent shots though. They have been doing a lot of renovation the last couple years & have a few major projects started and a few more in the planning for the near future. Before long it should be a really nice zoo, I hope. It's about time though, this zoo has always had small enclosures for the animals and the equipment & the like was all old.

A presentation of the California Sea Lions.
    This is Ariel:

This is her cage/pool mate, Flounder

This is one of the seals swimming under water

More pics are on the way....

My alltime favorite at the zoo, Yukon (his mate, Aurora was fast asleep in one of her dens all day, all you could see of her was one of her feet)

Did you know a polar bears fur is actually clear while their skin is black. Some light reflects off the fur and makes it look white while most of the sun's rays reach their black skin, which absorbs the heat and keeps the polar bear warm.

Same bear, taken from the other side of the enclosure

A snowy owl. I wish it came out better but (s)he was in the shade. They really are beautiful birds.

The South African Bush Elephants who were just moved into their new enclosure a few months ago. Their new barn is HUGE. The bigger one is Jenny C, who lost her baby earlier this year while in delivery. It was so sad because her behind is still all red & partially open. The smaller one in front is Lilac.

African Penguins, otherwise known as Black Footed Penguins. They are always such a cute little bunch to watch.

Amur Tigers, sorry about the sun, (it was a very sunny day). These are 2 of the 3 cubs that were born on May of 05'. They aren't that little anymore. lol

There's still more pics on the way....

Amur Leopard, this is the male, Dimitri. You can tell it was a warm sunny day, look at him pant.

    This is his mate, Nikita

These were some cute (in some people's eyes) butterflies we saw in the butterfly garden. They look like old leaves. lol

The White Rhino's. These two are this years visiting animals. (They have a different animal every year come visit). These creatures are so magnificant & surprisingly seem to move with grace & ease compared to their size.

One of the baby Bornean Orangutan's, Datu playing with another Orangutan wrapped in a bed sheet. These guys are such a blast to watch.

Ruffed Lemur, if you look zoom in at the snout it reminds me of a border collie or the like. lol

    Just a few more........

    Black Handed Spider Monkeys
This guy was such a ham for the camera, moving whereever I pointed the camera. Too bad they were all in the shade, none of the pics came out that well.

The same monkey (on the left) moved next to this guy when I went to take his picture. I don't think the other monkey was too happy, he was yelling at the one who kept following my camera. lol

One of the river otters. They were so active & my batteries were about to die so this is the best pic I got. lol I could watch these curious creatures all day long, they are always so playful.

That's all. I hope you enjoyed.
