Thread: What is the deal?

    What is the deal?

Just to start off with: This is not directed at anybody in particular. This is just something(s) that I have noticed over my time here which has, consequently, made it a less enjoyable (hurt feelings or annoyed, etc) stay.

Why is it that when someone, who is not as well known or has the highest post, takes the time and effort to do write/type out a (heartfelt or slightly less than) topic, or reply, or anything, that some folks just blow it off? Sure, most will READ it but they won't reply to it. Even when someone makes a post or a reply about/to another member, it will go unnoticed or looked at but unreplied to. I can understand in the case where everything helpful has already been offered BUT I have noticed that this is not the case most of the time. I look and see a needy, or helpful, or otherwise, post go away with a hundred or more views yet no replies. Also, of course, this doesn't really apply to folks who have limited time (ten minutes during a lunch break, an hour at the library)

I feel that, sometimes, others are made out to be better or more worthy of replies or noticed at all because they've been here a certain amount of time or have a certain amount of posts. Or that somehow, miraculously, their opinion is supposed to be worth more than anothers.

I feel that there are several people (myself included) who contribute helpful information, advice, and whatnot, yet we can hardly get a response.

I feel like I'm in a car wreck and most people want to slow down to watch but very few get out to help.

I appreciate EVERY single response that I get. While some are a little harsh, excluding the seriously despicable ones, I still appreciate them. I appreciate and admire the folks behind them as well. Thank you to all the people on PT who have ever taken the time out to say hi, offer advice, or just be a friend. You guys are great.

The only reason why I don't reply to a lot of things is that I'm not on a whole heck of a lot anymore...with my work schedule amongst other endevors I hardly have the time to get online. I see a few things though, and some times I feel like I really can't say anything more without sounding insincere, and I'm really not. I've gotten some good advice from people here, people I don't know in person but people who took the time to help me out anyway. I wish I could offer good advice in return for the wonderfull kindess I've been fortunate to recieve...unfortuneatly I've never been one to be able to do much outside of listen...and encurage people to leave it up to thier God and to ask for spiritual advice (I believe that communications with a higher power should begin at the personal level)

    Did that make sense?

Honestly, lately it seems just the opposite to me. I've noticed that the newer members get more replies and attention...maybe that is just in dog general though. I feel quite ignored and not well-liked here myself and I've been here since 2001 with 9,000+ posts....so....

I try to post when I have time, but if it's some topic asking for help/advice I usually do not post unless I actually have help/advice to give. Its not that I don't care, I just don't know what to say...

One thing to remember, too, is that some of the views may be from people who have not signed up to be a member. That may contribute to the lack of response.

That gave me great giggles! And it is truth.

I don't know. Before this post, I would get worried when I would post and I didn't get a reply because I would think that maybe nobody cared or whatever I posted about wasn't vital enough. Now, I know that's not the truth.

    PT is great.

    Yes, indeedy.

I understand with people who have limited time or don't know what to say without sounding insincere (have been there a couple of times). But I have noticed that there are some folks who seem to be on here for some time and only reply to select posts and that makes some people feel left out.

    Amy/wolf_q,

I understand about not wanting to give advice unless you have something to give. I feel that way, as well. I don't want to give somebody false hope/advice/etc. I often feel myself not having anything to say and then feeling dumb.

I'd love to reply to all posts in the cat section but I just don't have the time and with failing health at the moment (I'm not getting any younger!) I find it extremely hard to concentrate. I also noticed that when it's summer in one half of the world that half has a lot less people on forums, probably because they spend more time outdoors.

Not everyone has the time to respond to each and every post. As I have mentioned many times in the past, the Views should mean more to folks than the posts. Just because someone has taken the time to read your post doesn't mean they can think of something to say in response. I have been a part of boards where people will respond just for the sake of responding, with nothing to say, and it gets pretty boring, pretty fast. I also appreciate that people often have time constraints on their computer usage, and many people can only see Pet Talk while they are at work, so we don't need to get folks in trouble for posting.

Remember, no one can make you feel bad without your consent. Choose to see the views as people who were interested in your post, and in what you had to say, because that's likely the truth.

I really think you're being too sensitive about this. I never look at the number of postings a person has or how many views versus replies a thread gets. Don't focus on stuff like that. If you have something to say, say it. If people don't view it or reply, who cares? Sure, it's nice when you're asking for advice to receive some, but I'd rather receive zero replies than 20 replies saying ~ Sorry, I don't have any advice.

I Read Your Posts (and Wolf Qs)... And Honestly, I Don't Know If I Reply Or Not. I Say That Because I Want You To Know That I Don't "even" Know Who I Do Or Don't Respond To. I Don't Check Post Numbers Or How Long You've Been A Member (and I Don't Know If Folks Check My Numbers). So If I Have Ignored You, I Want You To Know That It Was Nothing Personal. I Also Want You To Know That I Think Of You As 'ol Timers!!! Lol.

I Guess I Answer/respond When Something Catches My Attention Cause I Am Currently Dealing With A Similar Situation Or Something Is Said That I Feel Really Strongly About Or I Disagree Stronglt, Etc., Etc. Hard To Say Just Why I Ever Respond, But I Definitely Do Not Go Out Of My Way To Ignore Anyone.

BTW... I READ YOUR BIO. HAVE YOU DECIDED ON A COLLEGE YET? AND ANY IDEAS ON A MAJOR?

I don't even look at who's posting. But sometimes there will be days where I haven't been here.
