A Few Questions About Cows

Cows have been one of my favorite animals, but I don't really know much about them. We might be moving to Monroe later this summer (we live in Renton right now) and I would really like to have a cow or a horse. I want a cow more than a horse though. Does anyone here on PT have a cow? I know Suki Wingy has a cow, but... who else?

-What can they eat?
-Are they rideable?
-Are they good pets?

I need to know everything I can know about cows, please

-What can they eat?
As calves they get a mixed and fortified grain and corn mix that you can buy at a feed store as well as some hay. (Timothy or Alfalfa) as they get older I think they just eat grass and hay.

-Are they rideable?
Yes, but not all will train and not all are comfortable. Most riding cows are Texas Longhorn Steers. Dairy are harder to train. You might want to check out these websites:

-Are they good pets?
Yes, quite lovable and friendly. They'll moo when they see you coming even if you don't have feed.

-The average show calf starts at about $1000. You can get crosses as just a pet from rescues though. Try looking on Petfinder.com . I have always loved cows and now I have one!

I don't think I will be getting a show cow, I'd much rather rescue one

You need to have PLENTY of room to have a cow, a happy cow anyway.

Well, there is big money to be made in the holstien showing world, but not our babies! They're not the best conformation but that's ok, I love them. I don't know much about that other than at our county fair. If they are registered you can do showmanship with them or open.
