Baby Squirrels

HJ's younger brother found a baby squirrel injured and unconscious in the middle of the street and being harassed by their cats. He was wondering what do they eat, how to feed, what to feed, how often, and how do you take care of it?

I am 4 1/2 hours away, and I told him the best option right now is to contact a wildlife rescue organization to properly care for it, but for right NOW what do you suggest?

I would have him look some info up in the library and on the web. I found a web site with a lot of good info: http://www.squirrels.org/faq.html , http://www.squirrels.org/raising.html , etc.

I chatted with one lady and her daughter who had a pet baby squirrel. It was really calm and sweet. That's what this made me think of!

He's the type of kid who will get attached and then want to keep it, but he is also pretty mature about doing the "right thing" in these types of situations, so after he gets it back on its' feet or even asap I'm going to have him contact some wildlife organizations so if the little guy (or girl) is injured it can be taken care of properly.

Nevermind, I was just informed the baby squirrel did not make it.

I'm sorry he didn't make it. It sounds like he was pretty far gone when he was found. It is really important that if he (or anyone) finds anymore they get them right to a wildlife rescue or a vet. Most vets will take injured wildlife and care for them.

It's important that you not feed a baby unless you have been taught to do so properly. I've raised several squirrels and other wildlife, I was taught by a woman who has been doing wildlife rescue for more than 30 years (I've been doing it for 5 years). I have seen so many die because other people feed them the wrong thing or the wrong way before bringing them to us.

I remember once being at my vet's office and one of the vet assistants took me back to see a baby dove that was brought in a short time before. The bird was in bad shape because a man thought he was helping an fed milk to the baby bird. The bird had to be euthanized.
