Gatorade works great to help keep a dog hydrated if their ill. That's not to say take away the water, but try to get some Gatorade or pedialyte in him as an extra. I'm not sure why the vet wouldn't give sub Q fluids, just to try to get him hydrated seems a little stange. I've attached a link below for the poison control for the ASPCA, I've never had to use them and there's a fee, but if your concerned you might want to check with them to see if your doing everything you can, I'm guessing they'll have a good idea about it. Bottom line is go with your instincts, you know your dog best (a vet only sees them maybe once a year if their healthy), and if you think he's not improving or is getting worse then he probably is. If you have problems or concerns about the treatment ask, the vet should have no problems explaining why their doing or not doing something.

    Get better soon Major.

I would defanlity give him pedialyte It has alot of the elecolights in it with no sugar it worked great for Denver.

I agree with LUV4DOGS the nose thing is a myth the only way you'll know his true Tempature is put it in his bum.

There's a few ways you can check for dyhadation one is to pinch his neck area and if it stick up and does'nt go back down within a couple seconds then there dyhadated but that method you'll onlt be able to tell if he's saverly dyhadated the other way is to check the gums and if they feel tacky then he's dyhadated and needs fluids right away.

I hope he's feeling better soon

IF he's dyhadated is can Kill him it shuts down all the organs so dyhadation is VERY VERY serious.

You can also look at the color at his Pee i know it's hard when they go outside but i put down a doggy pad when he peed so i could see what color it was the darker yellow it is the more dyhadated he is.

    I hope this helps

Thanks everyone. This morning he was doing much the same. But tonight he was a lot better. He greeted me when we came home from Yorkton, pretty happy! He drank some, I got him to eat about a cup of soaked kibble with some canned food. Apparently my mom cooked up some briscuit during the day, to give him too..haha.

The neighbor threw a hamburger patty out the window in our yard when I was at school....

But yes, he's taking the Vitamin K well, so we are happy. He's still tired and feels skinny, but since he has started to eat a little bit more, I think he will get a bit stronger each day. He had some energy and wanted to play with his toys tonight. He couldn't that well because of the cone thing, but we might have to take it off for a little.

Where would I get pedialyte from? Would that or gatorade be better? (Could I get something like Powerade???)

-thank you Poppy for the avatar.

I don't know about powerade i've never been told to use that
Pedialyte would be better then gatorade because gatorade had alot of sugar in it. Both are good but i would use pedialyte you can get it in any drug store like CVS,Walgreens also walmart, kmart, target all the regulars store carry it it's about $4.00 a bottle you don't have to use much just like 1/4th a cup is fine.

I like to have it on hand anyway it's good to have if the dogs get diarria or have been out on a warm day running around alot.

You should be able to get pedialyte anywhere, grocery stores, drug stores, walmart & the like, found in the baby/imfant sections.

First of all, sorry to hear he is under the weather and hopefully he is on the up and up. You can get clear pedialyte...flavorless...I had given that to Dale before...and also added it to his water bowl...when he had bad diarrhea and vomiting. If he isn't in the mood for flavored drink, or doesn't like th taste of it...the clear stuff might be a good idea...it would be in the store near the baby formula and foods. Hope he is well soon!!

How scary . I hope Major continues to improve. I was so afraid I'd get to the end of this thread and see things in further decline. What a relief to see a positive update... I just hope to see more. Please get well sweet Major!
