Gifts and Culture

If I am at all not sure what the person's expectations are, I ask "Should I open it now?"

If someone asks me, I say "Yes!" always. In my culture (New England Yankee is the best way I can describe it - more accurate - All-American Mutt) we open gifts in front of the giver, unless it's, say, a Christmas or birthday gift and we're told or meant to hold it until that actual day!
