Cassieknipp, that's correctGo ahead.
This breed was produced to have a more exaggerated head with a great dome and flatter face, possible from the Pug though it is uncertain. It was originally sought after and bred to warm the laps of royalty in their drafty castles and carriage rides. They were a favorite of the aristocracy in the early nineteenth century. A dog called Ann's Son became the model for the first breed Standards and in 1945 the Kennel Club finally recognized it as a breed apart.

The history began in 1930. The breed was created by the selective interbreeding of Rottweilers, Giant Schnauzers and Airedales, by the Russian Military. The intent was to develop a native breed that would fulfill the need for a large, working dog, suitable for a number of tasks, while being able to endure the harshness of the Russian winter.
In 1956, this culminated in the establishment of foundation stock that bred true.

This breed was originally bred to be a a large-game hunter wolves, wild cats, deer, boar, etc. but when imported the U.S. it became more used as a bird dog. Before the breed was brought to the U.S. you had to be a member of the breed's club inorder to purchase one. They are fairly new to the AKC. It's also said they may have bloodhound in their lines. And there was one in the White House.
English Cocker Spaniel
