You should do what I do... hehehe People around here overfeed their dogs so much, that a dog that is the correct weight looks underfed. Just the other day I had someone ask me if I didn't think Arthur was too skinny, and if I was feeding him the right amount every day........

I looked at them with a perplexed look and said,
"I fed them last week. What do you mean every day? They have to be fed EVERY DAY????"

The person just kinda backed off like I was a psycho. hehehehe Ask a stupid question, yer gonna get a stoopid answer!

OMG that is so funny lol! I know, my brother told me the same thing People are used to seeing overweight dogs so they think normal ones are skinny. I should be the one telling him that lol.

Major is such a handsome boy! And his eyes are soo pretty!

I had to up Felony's daily intake of food because he was getting a bit skinny... He runs it all off with me walking him, and the 3 little dogs chasing him and etc..

Major doesn't look too skinny, I just think he might need a little more food, since he's still a growing pup.

    Thanks for sharing the pics.

Gosh, Major is one cute dog! I think the rule of thumb on the weight thing is you should be able to feel the ribs, not see them. So Major might could use a lil' more food. I agree with heinz57_79 about people thinking the correct weight is too skinny though. I get that a lot with Oz and Gully, who really are at perfect weights. Murph, who is definitely overweight, is thought to be just right. I actually ended up asking the vet, just to make sure. People can really getting you doubting though.

    Wow! He's soo adorable!

He really doesn't look that bad, but if you think he's a lil' on the skinny side, maybe you should bump it up another cup per day.

I am so in love with him! He is such a cutie. I'm not one to ask about food because I can never feel the ribs in my dogs and I know that's not good. However, I feed Duke one cup dry and one can a day. So, with Major still being a puppy, he probably needs a little more since he is so active. But he doesn't look starved so don't worry a lot. I would do what others said and just up the food a little to see if that helps. He's so adorable.

Thanks everyone! He really is a cute dog! My mom thinks he looks like a "real dog" when I tell her, mom, ALL DOGS ARE REAL DOGS (she doesn't like small dogs like Shih Tzu's, Poodles, and all that, but hey, she loves Major and thats all that counts) I say "Mom, I might get an adorable dachsund just to PROVE YOU WRONG!" Haha but no, he really is a good dog I think I will up his food a bit and see how he does. He sure does have a lot of energy though! As I said before, he does the laps, where he gets going REALLY fast and he ran into me once and knocked me over. It's so funny to see him run, he only does it about once a day though.

Major is a cutie! Just adorable. I do not think he looks too skinny but I do think you should up his food a little. He is a growing boy and needs plenty of food for all the energy he is using

    He's just absolutely adorable.

I don't think he's too skinny, myself. But I like a trim dog.

Just my humble opinion - but I do think he should be on puppy formula until he's done growing. He's a growing boy and needs good, strong bones!

I'm looking forward to watching him grow up here on Pet Talk.

    Thanks for the siggy, Lexi_Lover!

Well I wasn't sure really what to do. I am trying to see if there are any good foods around here, because right now he's on Ol Roy. Their puppy food I think has too much protein, and I don't want him to grow way too fast seeing as he's large breed. So we got the other kind. I wasn't really sure

Oh Major, you are soooo precious! I wanna kiss that soft, warm, fuzzy belly! And your "close ups" are heartmelters

When Star (Lab) was a very young puppy I think she ate a total of 4-5 cups daily (I can't remember!) of a good qualilty puppy food, especially formulated for large breed dogs. We fed her 3 times a day until 6 months. From 6 months until one year old, she was fed 1 1/2 cup in the AM and 1 1/2cup in the PM, half puppy formula/half adult formula.

Now she gets adult food, 1 cup in the morning and 1 cup in the evening, along with an herbal supplement, some non fat yogurt and carrots/apples. We use Solid Gold Adult Maintenance. She's appx. 60 lbs. now, though she is on the smaller side for a Lab, but big boned. She's VERY active and the vet says her wt. is maintained perfectly on that schedule. She has a nice "waist" and you can easily feel, but not see her ribs. So many dogs are overweight/overfed and or underexercised, especially Labs! People think a Lab who isn't a big, hulking block is underweight Major looks very healthy to me but it's hard to tell from the pics. It looks as though the Labbie side of him is more of the American Field Trial Lab lineage...taller and leaner and finer boned than the more commonly seen (nowadays) English "style" Lab bred for confirmation. They are bulkier, broader, with shorter legs and a more square head.

If you're at all in doubt about his weight, call the vet or ask her/him the next time you go in for a visit!

HUGS to you Major!!! And Labbie butt wiggles from Star
