I will never get another dog from any place other than a shelter or rescue! I got Jake from a breeder and, while he's a great dog and I love him to death, I think the mutts I got from the shelter were better dogs. Max has so much character and is so sweet and loving and smart. Pepper was the same way.
When you adopt an adult dog, you know what you're getting and you don't have to go through the puppy stage. If you're selective, you can bring home a dog who's already had basic obedience and is already housebroken, and through the chewing and destroying stage. I got lucky both times and got dogs who were already fixed.
Like NWS_Haven said, if you're nervous about adopting from a shelter, rescues are wonderful! They can tell you all kinds of things about the temperament of the dog, and they are very helpful in matching you with the right dog.
I don't think enough can be said about mutts. They really are the greatest!
