Place the dog in a sit
Put your hand in front of their face and say "Stay!"
Don't move. Just stand beside them. Repeat until you feel the dog understands.
Do the same thing except take a step out and turn to face the dog (right in front of the dog, not allowing them to walk forward). Repeat as necessary.
Keep doing the same thing, adding only a foot at a time. I find it much more important to have a dog do a solid 5 minute sit/stay with me 6 feet away than having a dog do a 20 second sit/stay with me 50 feet away. Everytime the dog budges, place them back in the same position. Don't let them get away with inching forward.
I did this with my dogs. I also said "no" everytime they budged. Some do, some don't. It's without a doubt, the most solid command they know.
