The following was a sign on the wall of the old Yankee Doodle Inn (late of Norwalk, CT):
If a cat washes its face from cheek to ear
Your guardian angel she'll be for a year.
If a cat does its cleaning from ear to cheek
Bad luck you will have for the following week.
