in NM we had a similar thing. one group wanted a statue of Onate on public land. he was a powerful Spanish explorer, who the Indians hated (he had the nasty habit of cutting off their feet to keep them in control). anyway. the statue was erected and almost as quickly someone (a group) cut off its feet.
