Duke, you are such a special friend and companion. You truly deserve to be honored for being faithful and comforting and bringing love to your mom when she needed it most.

Your story reminds me of the problem that many abused humans have - they are afraid to leave their abuser because they have pets, and fear the abuser will harm the pet even more. Many human shelters are working with animal shelters and rescue groups to make sure that ANY creature being abused can find a safe haven away from harm.
