We've been there twice and loved it!Both times on the north coast. We stayed at "Camino del Sol" near Cabarete the first time and at Riu Merenque on the other side of Puerto Plata the second time. We liked the first one the best!
Yes, the beaches are fantastic, and the hotel standard is high.
If you're going to the north coast, let me know and I can give you a few tips.
If you're in Pueto Plata, don't miss the Bar called Cafe Cito, it's owned by a really nice canadian guy, ex consul. There's a greek woman who does the cooking and the music is great!
There are lots of other things you can do, than sit on a beach all day!
