I would never let me cat run off with the bird. Scruff them if you must and open their mouth. Take the bird out and let it go. Of course, that's if they let you catch them. Our cat Blacky loves to bring home sparrows, but he knows he shouldn't so it's a pain in the rear to catch him. He makes me so mad. Urrgh!
