You said that it would have been cruel to put one gerbil into an ice-cream container...and while I agree...didn't you consider any other options, like just picking up one gerbil for five minutes, letting them 'cool down', then putting it back and seeing whether they continued or not? I just think it might have been wise to cease the actual act. Your intervention didn't have to be permanent.
