I was living in Edmonton when Gretzy was traded away. People aren't mad at him so much as the owner of the hockey team. Now for a little digression:
Peter Pocklington owned the Edmonton Oilers at the time and had been given millions of dollars in loans by the Alberta government to save his meat packing plant. He then defaulted on the loans (and wasn't very nice about it). In the mean time he made this big "to do" about Gretzy being a national treasure and he would never be traded away. Well low and behold there was enough money in the world to "make" Peter Puck (his nickname) trade Gretzy away. I guess maybe you had to be there...
