Is he now considered a "dangerous dog"?

I feel as thought JRT are a breed that can either be REALLY good or REALLY bad for a family. Seems like they need the right type of owner to not be out of control and dominant.

The Health Department said Milo is in 0 trouble. I think everyone admitted what the child had been doing to the dog, but most likely sugar coated it a bit. So he is not labeled as one.

However I personally will handle him as such. He must be muzzled at all times when out in public (after his quarantine of course), but I'll only allow that with his soft muzzle & once I feel he really isn't a threat to anyone 75% of the time. The muzzle will be for people or children I do not spot in time that run up to him, or if I drop the leash, etc.

I personally cannot ever trust a dog like him in public. I have seen what he can do, and I know he was mistreated for so darn long. Its honestly not fair to the public nor himself.

I do plan to take him to the dog park to help socialize him in the warmer months, WITH the permission of everyone already in the park. I did the same when I first got Charlie (minus the muzzle), as I didn't know him well enough. Everyone was fine & he was a pretty good dog, just too excited & hyper.

We are glad the Health Department understands the truth of the situation, you and he are lucky in that regard. And I do think caution is the wise way to go, considering how long he was subjected to that awful treatment!

I understand completely of why you wouldn't trust him without it! That's what muzzles are made for. And of course, there's always the one kid with the one parent that doesn't watch the kid, and then you end up with a dog bite on YOUR plate and a lawsuit because the idiot parents can't control their kids.

That poor dog. No telling what he's been through in his life. I'm so glad you have him now. My Rose has trouble relaxing fully at times, too. Things like opening cabinet doors or refridgerator door makes her back up. Sounds like Milo is going to do great with you. Wonderful that he's made such progress already.

With progress, there is always a step back.

Milo just tried to bite me. I refused to back off as he is no longer the boss of anything. I just kept trying to repeat the same action until he pretty much gave up.

Who knew it could take 10 mins to get 1 bootie back on

He is wearing booties on his front paws as he clawed his face all up today while trying to get his muzzle off. Then when I put him in the XL kennel for muzzle free time, he licked his paws raw! His little toes were so swollen

His ear seemed to be too red & his face was a little puffy. I gave him some benadrl to see if it would help. His ear, face, and paws are looking much nicer. His paws are so soft from all the licking.

I need to get him some winter boots, as it must be the snow thats causing it. There is no salt of any kind on my walkway or front yard (where the pups potty). I'm soooo not prepared for another dog, blarg!

So sad to know what kind of life Milo has had until now. People really stump me at times. Such a cutie, I'll pray he might be so sweet that he's found his home--sounds like he's already accepting the new rules.

Just checking in for an update. Fingers and paws crossed that things will go well! I hope the Benadryl helps! Milo, your person is going to have you wear boots to protect your feeties for now.

He had a really good day today!

He is perfectly fine with me putting on the booties now. He doesn't even try to fight me at all. He does get too crazy/hyper/snarly with stuffies that squeak, so he is banned from those for now (I don't want to promote any growling as I'm working so hard on squashing his negative attitude). He enjoys the big rope, and the squeaky ball. I want to get him a beef bone from my Halal butcher, I think he'll love to chew on it during the day while I am at work.

He was muzzle free today, but tied. He had 0 issues through the day and was very well behaved.

He learned a valuable lesson outside. I tried to stop him from using his face as a snow plow, as the top layer is ice (freezing rain). He kept doing it until it cut his little nose His nose is fine. It wasn't very deep so the bleeding stopped quickly. This was the biggest reason I had him muzzle free today.

I set up the XL kennel in the basement (my pc is down there & so are all my critters). He loves to sleep in it. I have him tied to the base of the door, so he can come out & sleep on the big dog bed beside my PC. He has a water bowl & toys down here.

I find he is most relaxed down here, as the furnace fan is always on & makes noise that drowns out everything else. I also like it. So I had him sleep in the kennel down here last night. He didn't make a peep all night & was a happy little bugger this am when I got up.

He is currently passed out in his kennel with booties on his front paws

Last night we also had a HUGE break through with him. We don't think he hates the cat, nor wants to hurt her. We think he is just TOO interested in sniffing her, which she doesn't approve of yet. Last night we allowed him to run free on the main level of the house with his muzzle on. Cam came down the stairs to slink into the kitchen. Milo stood up & I told him to lay down and be quiet. He obeyed & stared at Cam. She came into the same room to get a drink of water. She has been slinking from room to room to look at him all day.

There is a waiting list for the program. I hope Milo moves up quickly and it may be less than three months. Could the health department help you get in sooner, considering the circumstances? If he is neutered sooner, would that improve your ability to help him learn new behaviors? Maybe three months is not a long enough amount of time that it would make a difference, though. I would like to say again, bless you for taking Milo in! And hugs to Charlie and Digi too!

The health department only cares about rabies. All they did was look at him from afar through a window, then leave. The guy didn't come anywhere near my place.

From what I read, no one gets in sooner. Everyone has to obey the waiting list. It kinda sucks, but I don't think it's the end of the world right now.

Milo and Cam were sharing the same dog bed tonight.

The remote static collar came in today. At first I thought it wasn't working as Milo was chasing the cat all over. The directions suck. So I pressed random buttons and now understand how it works. 1,2,3 is low med high. 4,5,6 is multi pulse. Not sure the strength for those 3. Then there is crazy vibrate. Milo hates it. It really breaks his focus.

After a short while of corrections on stop trying to chase the cat, he gave up. Once he layed down, Cam came straight over to him and fell asleep a couple feet away. They both got up over the evening, and both ended up sleeping near the other.

Cam loves to play with dogs, and really wants to be his friend. I am hoping he will understand quickly that Cam is not a squeaky toy.

I look forward to tomorrow. I really hope the crazy vibrating will allow him to control himself. The muzzle will remain for a very long time.
