If it's not a 24 hour clinic, I would ask if you can bring her home after her spay to heal. It's not really fair for her to be left alone overnight in a kennel if there are no staff there.

Yeah I'm going to ask them about that. I've heard other clinics let you take them home the same day. I know the vet here that is doing the surgery and I trust her to take the best care of Clover. She's been with me for all I've been through with Josie and Kiba. She was very patient and understanding.

Good luck to you and fast healing for Clover! She'll do fine I'm sure! I would also ask if you can take her home. If its not a 24 hour clinic, its no necessary to keep her there alone all night. My dogs personality didn't change at all... Except for being scared of the vets!

Oh I have another question. I have to go downstairs to get to where I live. Maybe 15 steps or so. I'm thinking this might be painful for her when she just has the surgery. Do you think it will still be ok for her to come home the day of her operation? She'd need to go up/down any time she needs to pee. I don't want her to be in pain. I also don't want her to be left alone in a clinic all night in case something happens. What do you all think? Is she ok to go downstairs?

As long as you take it at a slower than normal pace, she ought to be fine. No bounding up and barreling down the stairs ... and if it makes you feel better, see if you can leave a favorite toy or blanket that smells like you and like home with her for when she wakes up.

Please make sure that the vet gives you pain medication for her. Sometimes they don't. It can be an extra charge, but is worth it to make sure the pet doesn't have any discomfort. I know I don't really have to remind any of the Pet Talk parents of this, but I know some people IRL who have opted not to have the pet pain meds and it makes me so angry...

I know she will do fine. All the pets I've had spayed have been fine. It doesn't make us worry any less, though. ((Hugs)) for you and her.

When Prue was spayed, she had trouble with the steps at the Vet's but managed eventually. I have 15 steps into my house, plus porch steps to get to the front door. Prue did fine with them the following day.

The following day she acted as though she had never had surgery. I kept her quiet for the required amount of days. That was difficult as she was still pretty young (7 months).

She did have pain meds before coming home, thus the trouble with seeing to get up and down the steps. She made the steps, just much more slower than usual.

Relax. She'll be fine. Of course there are exceptions but in general - no problems. Oh, one more thing: I asked the vet to give her the lightest dose of "knock out" - as I read that Tibetan Terriers do not do well under an anesthetic. I don't remember which anesthetic the Vet gave her, but it was noted on her chart. I don't know if that is an issue for your dog's breed.

I worried like hell for the few hours she was gone. I hate putting a pet through pain. It was necessary as far as I was concerned, as I did not want to breed her etc.

Speaking of dogs, mine needs to go out. She stands and looks at me..... with her sad face. And it's snowing like crazy here now. Which translates to a dog filled with snow pack on her body and legs and then the big MELT!

No need to worry, sweet Clover girl will be totally fine! She will live a much happier, healthier life after she's been spayed.

She should be totally fine with going up and down stairs. Just make sure you keep her quiet for a week or so after her surgery. No running, jumping, rough-housing (either with you or other dogs), and just general roughness with her. Make sure you have them get you all set up with an E-collar (cone of shame) as well. Odds are she'll want to get at her sutures! And it's never a good thing when they pull them out themselves! Yes, they will offer you pain medication and plus or minus antibiotics, but some clients decline them. I'm all for pain control it's not even funny! If the procedure would be considered painful to you, it WILL BE painful to them as well! No baths until after her sutures are removed (if not absorbable sutures, 10-14 days is when they are removed). Make sure to not feed her 12 hours prior to dropping her off, so food the night before but no food/water the morning of her procedure! (But your veterinarian will tell you their hospitals policy!)

I called them today and asked if she'd be able to come home the same day. She said I could put a request in with the vet and if she does well in the surgery and the vet feels she's OK to go home then I can come get her.

I think they do this so people don't freak out in the middle of the night and call them?

I took Clover in this morning her her Spay I worried ALL night about it. The vet office just called me and said she is out of surgery and did fine. She's sleeping now. They said they'll let me know later if she can come home. I told them I don't want her alone from 5:30pm til 7 or 8 am the next day. She'd pee in her kennel and have to sleep in it all night. They said she'd just sleep anyway. I said I'll keep her in a kennel and just let her out to pee. I'd be so much more comfortable having her with me. I miss her and can't wait to give her a hug and kiss. I hope she's not too mad at me for having her go through all this.
