Several people on another board I follow use their dogs in boar hunting. They're a great teammate to have on your side, and the pigs can be so dangerous...they're doing a service for the people around them by reducing the numbers of pigs.
There are places where wild boars are a huge problem where gunfire is not allowed. Wild boars do an estimated $800 million in damage per year.
As has been mentioned, wild pigs are SMART. Even a hunter with a gun can be caught off guard. Having a dog whose keen senses can give you better warning of the pig's approach is MUCH safer for the people involved.
