I would NOT go alone! You will probably need witnesses as to how you found things and how you left things when you are done. Do you know any policemen that could go with you off duty? You need to COVER YOUR BUTT! Take pictures of your car/truck when it is loaded to prove what you took as well as making a list of every item. Take a picture of the storage unit as when you are ready to leave to show what you left.... BUT you will need witnesses that the pictures are accurate!

I'd take as many witness's as I could every time I go.

I hope at least this phase, the opening of the storage unit, is less painful than going to the lake house, insofar as contents go anyway.....so very sad.....

Get a police officer to either go with you or meet you there. Not an off duty one. It's their job. Make sure someone else is with you as well. I know of several women who had the police meet them at their former residences whent they went to pick up their stuff, even if their former spouse was not supposed to be there. In a couple of cases, the person WAS still there and the police got them to vacate the premises. Call ahead of time and set something up. Get a friend or two to go with you each time you go. If you were here in Florida I would meet you there! Don't let him play games with you and don't think that he won't do something stupid or dangerous.

My former husband is considered a "mild mannered, likable man" by most people that know him, but when we were breaking up I made the mistake of getting in the car with him. He began driving recklessly and dangerously to frighten me saying that he didn't care if he lived or died. Thankfully we were close to our destination so I jumped out at the next light and walked the rest of the way. Be careful.

Why would he even want your things - other than to say he can do what he pleases and is more powerful than you. Is it an ego and power trip for him??? I just don't "get" guys like this! My take on this, is that he wants punish and hurt Gayle.
Some guys are like that....if they can't have what they want, then they lay waste to it.
