This morning he was lethargic and still didn't want food. I didn't give him his steroid dose in case that might have something to do with this.

I went to work at the shelter at 7:00am. At 9:30 I called Dr. Bill and told him what was going on. He thought it was very likely a reaction to the large steroid dose (Pred oral suspension, 10mg/ml, dosage 1ml every 12 hours). I told him I hadn't given Sydney the morning dose, so Dr. Bill said "Give it to him now (you can't just go cold turkey on pred), and if he's still the same in another day or two I'd like to see a stool sample." I told him I'd brought one with me this morning in case he'd like to see it, so he said he would.

I went home and gave Sydney 1/2 ml of the Pred. At this point he seemed more alert and on the ball than he had earlier, so I gave him a small dish of warmed-up wet food, half KD with Chicken and the other half some real yummy nom-noms (Friskies and Fancy Feast). He wolfed it all down!

So I went back to the shelter (dropping off the stool sample on the way), finished up about 2pm, and came back home. Sydney looked about the same, so I gave him some more food, this time all kidney food. He didn't eat this quite as enthusiastically, but he did eat most of it.

Dr. Bill is going to call later with the results of the stool sample check.

Glad to hear that he ate! I hope your vet is right and it's "just" a reaction to the steroids. Poor boy!

Hoping its just the meds making him feel yucky. Gentle hugs.

Thank you, Kirsten and Gayle. This afternoon and evening Sydney has seemed about the same, more alert and interested in food, after I'd spent a while on-line.

I didn't know if he was still dribbling diarrhea, but I couldn't see any "newer" looking blobs of it. Finally I decided to take a chance and let him out again into the living room. I kept the bedroom door closed, though.. If he were to crawl back under the bed and then dribble, I would NOT want to have to contend with first trying to get him back out and then, I don't even have any idea how I would be able to clean up any globs under the bed! The room is too small to move the bed any distance.

There was diarrhea all over the bathroom floor, the sides of the litter box, on the bathmat and his bedding, on the floor of the bathtub, and all over another litter box in the tub (litter disposed of and box waiting for me to have a chance to clean it up). I decided to tidy this up some for him.

I took the soiled bedding outside, shook it all out to dislodge bits of litter and anything else that might fall off, then put it all in a bag to take to the laundromat.

I swept up the loose debris and got up larger globs from the floor. I didn't see much point in washing the floor yet if he might just come back in and do it all over again. I wanted him to have a clean surface to get around on, though, so I put newspaper down on the floor all over the dried diarrhea smears.

I ran a lot of water into the bathtub with the two dirty litter boxes in it. Then I poured a LOT of bleach in with the water and let that soak for a while. I cleaned out the bathtub and litter boxes thoroughly.

Then I put in a clean litter box with clean litter in it and gave him a clean bathmat and clean bedding.

Meanwhile, he has been spending his time in the cat condo in the living room. There is a donut bed on the floor of his little "room" in the condo, and it's okay if he dribbles on that, easy to add to the dirty laundry.

He just now came right over here to the litter box next to the table the computer is on. He got in and stood to poop.. strained and nothing came out. So that's still going on. No diarrhea, at least. But I guess he will be spending the night in the bathroom again.

Dr. Bill called about 5:30pm and I just missed him. He left a message saying the poop specimen was negative and asked me to call him tomorrow morning and we'll discuss where to go from here.

So Sydney seems to be doing a little better with the poop problem, and I guess is still improving on the infection. pleasepleaseplease!!!!!

Thank you again, everyone, for all your prayers and kind thoughts and good wishes. I'll keep you posted on how my Sydney is doing.

Love from Sydney and Pat and the gang
