I doubt it is true since the original "victim" wold have been arrested for actually stealing the mugger's wallet, phone, clothing, etc....

I think it's bogus since even Snopes has various versions of the same email. The one you posted was different from the one I'd seen. If it was true I think it would have been cut and pasted verbatim rather than modified (i.e. the version you posted made an Obama reference, but I originally saw this story long before he was ever on the scene)

It's a feel-good story for sure and it may have been based on an actual incident at one point in time but now I think it's taken on a life of its own and become a parody of itself.

My husband and I belong to the SCA-Society for Creative Anachronisms, we do medieval re-enacting. Many years ago there was a story along the same lines except the mugger pulled a switchblade and the "muggee" pulled a sword as he happened to be on his way back from an event. The line that has been passed down thru history:"I see your six (the switchblade) and raise you 30 (the sword)." The muggee then demanded the guy's wallet, shoes, and jacket (I think) and flagged down the first cop he passed to give him the info on the mugger....and that one IS true!

Sort of like the movie "Crocodile Dundee" when he is approached by that mugger with a switchblade, Crocodile says "That's not a knife, this is !!!" and pulls out an 8" bowie......heee heee.
