    I haven't had fruit cake in years, but I remember the only cake I liked was made by Claxton. All of their cakes had lots of pecans and walnuts and had a Pound Cake batter base.

    I'm NOT envious!! I don't like all the stuff in it, except the nuts and alcohol - oh, and marcipan

    Anyone have some good recipes with marcipan - I have lots of it!

    Btw, do we really need more fruitcakes on this forum!!

    I've always hated fruitcake. My parents actually like it though.

    I saw this brand is Sam's when I was there this a.m., and almost bought one. Are they really good - and not too heavy on the green and yellow candied fruit (the name slips my mind right now). Citron???

    Yes, I AM a fruitcake!

    When I was ten years old, this recipe was published in our local newspaper - a recipe that had been baked and sold by a local baker, Marty Aronowitz. My mom made them every year and now I do, too. A few years ago I decided to google it and sure enough they are still made in Ft Worth Texas!! I have not made them yet this year but I have the fixings. No citron, only good natural ingredients in this cake which is fabulous!! My mom would tuck them into a tin and douse them with brandy at Thanksgiving so they'd be "drunken" by Christmas

    MARTY ARONOWITZ'S FRUITCAKE

    first published in 1964 in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram


    * 1 pound pitted dates ( I buy chopped)

    * 1/2 pound candied cherries

    * 1/2 pound candied sliced pineapple

    * 1 pound coarsely chopped pecans

    * 1 cup sugar

    * 1 cup flour

    * 2 teaspoons baking powder

    * 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

    * 4 eggs

    * 1 teaspoon vanilla



    Line angel-food tube pan with parchment paper. Spray with vegetable cooking spray, if desired.

    Cut fruits into small pieces; mix with chopped pecans. Sift dry ingredients together; mix with fruits and nuts. Beat eggs with vanilla; pour over fruit mixture. Mix well.

    Pack into pan. Bake for 2 hours at 250 degrees. Top of fruitcake may be decorated by removing cake from oven after 1 hour and garnishing with more pineapple slices, halved cherries and pecan halves.

    Return to oven to finish baking. Cool completely, preferably overnight, before removing from the pan.

    I don't really care for fruit cakes. I think the red and green candies are yuck!! But my mom and grandmother LOVE them!! My aunt always makes everyone in the family one for Christmas so they're looking forward to one this year too ;] You know what sounds good, someone mentioned something about one up above earlier I think--anyways a pound cake sounds yum! I love just plain regular pound cakes! ;]

    I LOVE fruitcake and so do all my family.. as I am in China most of the year I have make everybody in my family a nice big one during the summer holiday when I am home. Then I douse them with brandy and little orange liquer and wrap them tightly in foil. They taste great by Christmas!! I even bring two large ones back to China with me and disappear very fast when I put them out to share.

    I make an English recipe, no pineapple or candy, mostly raisins, walnuts, currants, and some peel from citrus fruit, dark brown sugar, treacle(molasses) lots of eggs, good butter and flour. I put marzipan on them I can find it ( like hen's teeth in China) but just in case I can't get it I cover the top with almonds ( like a dundee cake - ask Killearn Kitties LOL).

    I was shocked by all the jokes about "fruit cake" in North America you are missing out if you haven't had any of the good stuff!

    I don't think I'm an expert on fruit cake but I did like the Claxton cake. I never
    noticed the color of the fruit so I cant say if it has a lot of green and yellow.
    The cake itself is heavy and moist.
