    I just read that Ernie Harwell has cancer of the bile duct.

    Best wishes to him and his family.

    He has a wonderful attitude about everything. And he is much loved by everyone who was ever within the sound of his voice.

    Ernie greeted each new baseball season with a verse from Song of Solomon -

    For, lo, the winter is past,
    The rain is over and gone;
    The flowers appear on the earth;
    The time of the singing of birds is come,
    And the voice of the turtle is heard in our land.

    The Cubs are now 11 back. Not much joy in Wrigleyville. But the Sox are only 6 1/2 back, so there is still hope for the South Siders.
    Praying for peace in the Middle East, Ukraine, and around the world.

    I've been Boo'd ... right off the stage!

    Aaahh, I have been defrosted! Thank you, Bonny and Asiel!

    Derek Jeter

    Jeter has tied Lou Gehrig's mark of 2,721 hits in a Yankees uniform. This record has stood for 70 years.

    The Yankees are off tomorrow, but look for him to break the record on Friday, at the Stadium, against Baltimore.

    At least it is Jeter, who likely will spend his career as a Yankee.

    Ernie Harwell

    The voice of our childhood is in its sunset.

    A really good article about Ernie from this morning's Freep.

    An FYI - In 1948, Harwell became the only announcer in baseball history to be traded for a player when the Brooklyn Dodgers' general manager, Branch Rickey, traded catcher Cliff Dapper to the Crackers in exchange for breaking Harwell's broadcasting contract. (Harwell was brought to Brooklyn to substitute for regular Dodger announcer Red Barber, who was hospitalized with a bleeding ulcer.)
