I've read some stories in my life but this one is making me see red. Why did the police take this on and not animal control?
No one enjoys getting bit but for heaven's sake, you would think there was a herd of wild dogs loose, the way they handled it.

The little dog weighed five pounds? I know that small dogs can really bite but that is a tiny little fella. Smaller than my Daisy. Tiny. There had to be a better way to contain this pint sized dog. A bite is a bite but......

I feel so sorry for this family and this poor little doggie. I can't imagine how bad they feel right now. I know they're devastated.

I know the authorities have to do whatever they feel necessary to protect themselves but c'mon guys!!! Are you a little humiliated about how this went down??

Rest in Peace Jack Play hard at the bridge little guy. You left this world too soon.

Again, the excuse will be "the officer feared for his life/safety".

If the dog was shot three times for biting, what do people get?

The part that really.. enrages me is that they are charging the family for having a vicious dog. Good god, its a chihuahua. They have tempers, and from what I read it seems they backed it into a corner. Bite does not = kill it, in any case.

It was handled poorly. I really believe the cops were mad because they got bit and took their rage out on the poor little dog.

I have known alot of people in my life that simply don't like Chihuahuas, or other small dogs. ~I'm not saying the dog should have bitten them.~ The little guy was scared to death. He was using his natural defense system. He didn't know what else to do.

I can't get this story off my mind. It makes me sick. I would be equally sad for a large breed too.

I would have been much more the outraged!! FIRST of all, since when do police go around chasing dogs that got out of their homes? Secondly, this cop is obviously gun happy!

Following rules, my butt. Rabies in domestic animals is very rare, especially in the United States. From the article, he was showing no symptoms of Rabies. People with a functioning brain know not to corner a scared dog! The thing that bothers me the most about this is the police department isn't investigating further. The guy is just gonna wash his hands of this and that will be the end of it. Again, no justice for an innocently slain animal. The cop should at least get a suspenstion really, but of course he won't. What a moron

The dog was not only terrified, but he was defending his territory.

How sad. Something similar happened in Springfield, OR, the town right next to us, to a client of ours dog. The police were called to the house NEXT DOOR for a burguarly, but ended up going to the wrong house. The police went into the backyard and the dog was in the back and started barking and growling at the officers. She is the sweetest dog ever!!! But it was her backyard, so I don't blame her. Anyway, the police ended up shooting her in her leg, which required surgery to fix. Luckily she lived, and the police station paid for her surgery. She recovered though and is doing well. I suppose they never caught the person who was robbing the house next door.

From the comments in the first link Collin posted, the officers tazed the dog, and shot it twice, before the final shot was fired. They had a snare pole but set it aside after cornerring the scared dog on its own porch. The AHs werent even wearing gloves.

The two DA cops should make a public appology, be fined for animal cruelty and pay a resitution to the family.

Firstly the cops were completely DAs for not calling AC, secondly if they were gun happy the officer wouldnt have been bitten.
