They make it easier because you don't have to lift the mattress to change the sheets. You can just unzip, change the pad and rezip. You don't have to remove the bumper either. The bottom part of the sheet set rarely needs to come off because baby doesn't sleep on that part. It fits the mattress like a cupcake wrapper would fit a cupcake, around the bottom, then the zippered sheets zip all the way around the top close to the edge, so the zipper is a) covered and b) out of the way so baby won't sleep on it.
Hugito also slept in his carrier for the first few weeks he was home. That was the only way he slept in the beginning.
This crib is similar to Hugito's. This one is nicer tho.
