I've heard of this in some shepherds that are anxious and nervous but never in other breeds but I guess it happens. Great that you found a foster mom for the rest of the litter or you would have lost the whole litter.

I doubt we would have lost the rest of the litter. They've all been nursing pretty good from her and if the worst had happened we would have bottle fed them. My friend and I both have experience bottle feeding. We found the best possible person to foster the pups. My friend is very confident these pups will be fine once introduced to their new mummy. We'll be most likely leaving early tomorrow morning as the bitch's temp has dropped to 97 degrees.
This can happen to any breed. It's not something that could really be pinned to one breed.

How very sad, I am glad you were able to intervene for the remaining puppies.

How horrible! I'm glad the remaining 3 puppies are doing great though! and have found a new mom to nurse off of!
I know this is not the same... but Paris' litter this past Sept. This was her first litter and she was TOTALLY clueless with what to do. Wouldn't lay with the puppies, wouldn't clean them, or wouldn't willingly let them nurse. For about the first 3 days she was like this... I had to get up every 2hrs day and night and lay her down and make her lay down so they could nurse. Luckily she was never aggressive with them.. she just had no clue what she was doing. After about 3 days though something clicked in her brain and she became a GREAT mother.... and I never had to do anything with them after that!
Good luck with the babies! Hope they continue to do well!

If you're gonna breed Collies, don't you forget to breed in the brains and common sense. Without that you won't have a Collie, you'll have just another dog.
I've Been BOO'd!!
Poor pups!!!! I hope the other three have a good life! that is so sad to think of. Poor pups!!!!
Monica Callahan KPA-CTP *Woohoo!*
Ya know what's odd about our situation is the bitch KNOWS what she's suppose to be doing. She wants to nurse them. She also wants to eat them. I did some research last night and couldn't find any reason for her doing this other than some dogs just aren't good mothers.

Could the mother dog maybe be lacking something in her body health wise to cause her to do this? I know of an Australian Shepherd, when she has her pups she keeps moving around dumping them all over the place. Some of them just seem to lack that motherly dog sense. Sorry, about the pups too. A muzzle was a wise thing to put on her till you can transfer the pups over to the new mom.
