HIV scare puts Mo. school in uncertain territory

In the district I work, as long as it's after school hours, and there is a teacher who is willing to be the supervisor (not involved, but to make sure that nothing is going on, and this is for any after school activity that students want to start), our district is not allowed to deny them access.

Back in the 70's and early 80's, the latest I can vouch for, we did CCD at a local High school; ironicaly it was the one my dad taught at but thats a different thread. The local churches have grown to where they have their own pre and after school programs, maybe being a small comunity has its advanages.

Same goes to groups that want to use the school facilities as a meeting place.
Boy Scouts (and they do pray, so I'd consider that a religious group)
Girl Scouts
4-H
Latino groups (yes, it can be by race/ethnicity as well)

Getting in the "Way back Machine", when I was a Cub and Boy Scout, our meetings where held at the Scout leaders home. I have never seen a Boy Scout, Eagle Scout, or Girl Scout uniform in a public school, even after school hours.

What about the moment of silence that some places do after the Pledge to Allegiance? Many say that's used for silent prayer.

After middle school I cant recall saying the Pledge of Allegiance in HS, even if we did I can say there was no moment of silence.

There are specific means of transmission in order to spread/get AIDS.

50 people?

Instead of testing for the disease the school district should have programs going for sex ed and drug education. UNLESS these kids were exposed to that person's bodily fluids-and you really have to work at that-in a very intimate way, there probabkly is nothing to worry about.

Of course, everyone will be screaming bloody murder until answers are found.

Kids can be effing cruel to each other in circumstances like this. I have to laugh at the refusal of the football team to play at the school. Everyone knows that the quarterback is doing something evil right before he takes the snap.

Typical uninformed, ignorant small town hysteria. The morons in this town will remember this as the "AIDS scare of '08". Nothing more.

And no, you cannot pass it around by breathing the same air in the room as a person that is infected.

And the poor 50 kids, unless they were heavy into some 'things' they shouldn't worry.

As for the football team cancelling, I get that. I personally would not let my children play a contact sport against someone that I knew/suspected of being infected with HIV. Accidents happen, football players bleed, in a lot of cases the trainers don't even change gloves before mopping bloody noses or swabbing at scrapes. Transmission of the virus in this way is not very likely but it is not a chance I would be willing to take.

I teach in middle school. You'd be surprised at the amount of kids in 7th and 8th grade that are seriously, sexually active. And how many of these kids are "dating" then ditching, and then dating another? We've got pregnant 7th and 8th graders, and I'm sure there's 6th graders doing the same thing. It's a sad commentary on kids these days, and the lack of involvement by family, not knowing what their kids are doing (or if they know, do they not care??).

What's the legal age of consent? Yeah, I know. What are guidance counselors doing about it? Nada. Not in my school. You can tell a counselor that an underage kid is having sex, they don't give a crap. It's sad. Our one guidance counselor was unmarried, pregnant, and was having little get togethers in the guidance office with the 8th grade pregnant girls. Sweet, huh??

It's sad to say, but the possibility of 50 kids being sexually active and exposing others, it's a probability. The fact that they're not using protection (if it's through intercourse), is just sad.

Many kids these days do not consider other sexual activity to actually be sex, and can pass HIV that way.

The behavior and the attitudes of some of the administration and counselors in my school totally disgust me(not sure how many other of our schools in our district are this way).
