A few people I know had rotties and I'd agree with the above. Large breeds tend to have a shorter life than smaller breeds, all other things being equal.

I'd say closer to 12 than 8. Dogs are living longer now what with better vet care and better overall quality of care in their lifetime. Fewer and fewer of the large breeds are dying simply of old age at 8 years old.
