They called and asked me to pick Jack up at 5:50 so Dr. Freeman could check on him before he left and he would have time to talk to me. Jack's surgery took twice as long as they thought. He evidently had infections throughout his early life (before we got him I hope) and that built up scar tissue to the point where there was no defining point between his jaw bone and teeth. The roots of those big long front teeth were very long and took a lot of drilling to get out - he ended up drilling into his jaw bone to get them out. You could see where the new infections had eaten away some of the root too. All very disgusting. He kept the teeth to show me how bad they were and I actually brought them home. Since Phred had called I told them about the Pet Talk meeting and he said I could take them but by tomorrow they would be stinking. Christy and Carl wanted to see them so I brought them home anyway. Dr. Freeman used 4 packages of suture thread to sew the poor dog back up. He said he pulled 26 teeth out of a greyhound in March and it only took 3 which tells me how much cutting and drilling into the bone he did. He sent home 2 pain meds and 2 antibiotics for him. He said Jack would probably be feeling better tonight than he did when he came in this morning. And that we may see a new younger Jack - that sometimes the teeth are making them so bad and they feel so good after that they act like 2 year olds again. Jack is so quiet and calm that I can't see him acting like a normal 2 year old Airedale. He said he could come to the Dog Park meeting as long as he didn't spend the whole day running - I forgot to tell him that a running all day Jack is not a dog WE ever knew.
So I feel like a bad doggy mommy but Dr. Freeman said it was hard to say when those old infections that caused the scarring was and with the problems we have been having with Snoopy the last couple of years it would be hard to realize Jack was having problems since he didn't really show any symptoms until he started to loose weight.
Phred, they told me you called. Thanks alot but you are really too generous to us.
