Jack Needs Lots of Toofers Pulled!

I think my dogs are trying to prove my parents right - that dogs are too expensive to have - at least 5 of them at a time. It isn't enough we had to pay out so much on Snoopy this year (God rest his soul) and then on Dazzi's mouth and foot (lump removed) - now Jack has been losing weight steadily since last year - 10 lbs since last year - 4 since March. As some of you know, the people who had Jack originally kept him chained alot and he chewed on the chain. Now his teeth are broken or are just plain wore down so far that you can barely see them. Dr. James did some blood tests in March because of the weight loss and the fact that he was peeing and pooping in the house and it was decided he just was getting senile (he is over 10 now) and they put him on a medication. Which has helped with the latter but not the weight loss.

On Thursday, Dr. Freeman saw him and after looking at his teeth said he had infections started in several and he felt he would need to pull at least 10 possibly another 10. Did you know that a dog has 40 teeth? Yep, another one of those trivia pieces of knowledge that every one knows. We are talking to him now about a payment plan because we are way off budget for dog expenses for this year and maybe the next several. We had Oreo for 16 years and only had yearly expenses except for maybe once or twice - mostly during her last year when she started to go downhill.

If I hadn't seen for myself the difference it has made in Dazzi I would probably put it off for awhile longer. But she seems to be a much happier, calmer dog since he pulled her infected teeth so I really hate to put it off too long. I am hoping that he can do it this week.

So out come the request for prayers again. Please pray that this IS the reason Jack is losing weight and that it won't be so costly we have to get another mortgage on the house.LOL

Oh dear, Jack's mouth must be so sore with infection setting in. Prayers that you find a way to swing it soon so he can start the healing. AND that this is the weight loss cause.

Maybe you remember, my Marlin had 32 teeth out last September; he was my foster dog at that time. It was rather traumatic. Make sure you get a pain injection before you bring him home. He was in such pain I couldn't get the pills in him and for 3 days he refused to eat drink or let me near. So he got dehydrated and I had to take him back to the vet. Another pain shot and some fluids and we came back home. After that he slowly recovered. He ate nothing but soft food for almost 4 months. Today he crunches up Milk Bones! He has 6 teeth, 3 lower left rear, 3 lower right rear.

You may like to ask for Metacam for pain relief. The senior dog study raised some questions about Rimadyl an side effects in older dogs. My vet insists he has never had any problems. Still, I prefer to stick with one which didn't raise any concerns. Small Paws Rescue will not reimburse foster parents for Rimadyl.

PS for anyone doing math: 32 extractions, 6 left equals 38. Two teeth fell out in the vet waiting room the morning of the dental!

Diana, I hope that getting those teeth out will help Jack to have many more happy, healthy years in your home.

    Keep us posted, please.

Now that we have a date set for the extractions which is next Friday, he is eating better and seeming to feel better. Isn't that just like a dog (or kid)? However with the shape his teeth are in and the infections already started I think we have no choice but to go ahead with the surgery. Thanks for asking Liz!

Well, tomorrow's the day! Pray for Jack and us - he doesn't want more than 10 teeth pulled and we don't want to have to pay for more than 10 teeth pulled. And pray that this is the reason he is losing weight and he will start feeling and doing better soon. He goes in at 8:30 but they don't do the surgery to later morning, they should call early afternoon and then he will come home late afternoon.
