Huskies aren't the only dogs who can pull sleds. Just as Border Collies are the only dogs who can herd. Any dog can be trained to herd to some extent, and any dog can be trained to pull sled (well, except for smaller and toy sized breeds).

There is a saying among mushers---"any dog can be trained to pull...ask a golden retriever to Gee and he does it. Ask a husky and he waits for the break in the trees!"

No responsible musher would let a puppy that young actually pull. Most let them run loose with the team for short runs at that age or ride in the sled. It's a great time to train them to stay in the sled. Very helpful should they ever need to be loaded in the sled for some reason in the future. At about nine months they can start to do some actual work. Between a year and 18 months they are able to do more heavy or longer runs.
If you are lucky enough to find a way of life you love, you must find the courage to live it.

    This is truly sad!!
Was it the golden puppies that were sick??

Shannon Debruin whome I plan on purchasing a siberian husky puppy from in the future, was the person who bred Hugo, the sibe pup in that movie.. She is an awesome breeder, she also had dogs in snowdogs, and in 8below..

So I am assuming it was one of the Golden breeders who brought parvo on the set?? I hope they got the virus undercontrol!! RIP sweet little pups

I just got the explanation of what happened to the pups from the lady
who owns the Saint in the movie. The supplier for the pups did not have
enough pups the right age so shipped 4 and 5 week old pups with no shots
to the movie set. He lied on his shipping paperwork. The babies got ill
quickly and some did die but the movie crew got good vet care for all of
them and many survived. The movie was delayed while the ASPCA
investigated the deaths. The movie folks were smacked for accepting the
underage pups but the movie was released as they were cleared of any
invovement in the pups being ill. All the pups have since had health
clearances and are in good homes.
No, there's no excuse. No reason why they need four week old pups when they can't get ones old enough. That is the most pathetic cover-up story I've heard. The film crew accepted and paid for the puppies didn't they. There is quite an obvious difference between 4 and 8 weeks.

I, for one, hope the golden retriever breeder is exposed for this. I'd want to find out who this is. Lemme at 'em.

I thought the concept of puppies winning a sled dog race was stupid to begin with. There's no concept there I'd want to teach children. Ooo cute puppies pulling a sled, what is that? They could have at least used adult golden retrievers.
