If the Nuremburg Zoo had anything to do with the mating of these two female Polar Bears (which I am sure they did), then they have already "tampered with nature," and are responsible for the lives of those young cubs. If the mothers don't practice? What!?! The mothers don't have the natural instincts because they have been removed from anything that is "natural." Yes, let's not have people come to the zoo (and thereby contribute money to the upkeep of all of the animals) to see the cute little bear cubs because it may hurt the giraffe's feelings.

IMHO, the zoo has nothing to do with the wild. It doesn't matter one bit if the babies are raised with humans or their mother because they're going to be in a zoo! I'd expect them to step in an raise the babies, especially if the species is even remotely endangered.
Those people who protest zoos stepping in, need to get a life and some common sense. Do you think they'd raise puppies if the mother dog died?
