Just a question: is "Hey!" a substitute for "Hello!" anywhere other than the Chicago area?

I say it all the time. It's pretty common around here.

I use that all the time too, and am curious to see how widespread it is

I think the only time I use "hello" is when I answer the phone

We use it here a lot, too. Like "Hey! What's going on??"
