Most likely Demodex or puppy mange. Usually brought on by stress to the immune system. My little Barney had kennel cough within days of being brought home from the shelter. After that cleared up, about 1-2 weeks later the Demodex mites started to get out of control.Originally Posted by Pris1213
Some Vets prefer to wait a little bit of time to see if it gets worse. The idea being some breeds are genetically prone to severe cases. When genetically linked it will reoccur throughout the dog's life. In very mild cases the puppy's immune system will sometimes kick in and get the mites under control. Except in the most severe cases, the treatment is relatively simple and effective - oral ivermectin for 1-2 months. My little guy didn't like the taste of it, so I had to mix it with a little milk and honey. Check with your Vet as to the appropriate amount of Vitamin-E (succinate salt form) to supplement the diet with. The Vitamin-E will help the skin repair itself. Also a small amount of fish oil (too much will cause diarrhea) will help the skin.
