The vet said it is the chronic kind. That he will have a flare-up - we just don't know when. He has too many things going against him for it not to happen again - his seizure medicine, the fact that his liver was damaged a few months ago from a illness that was possibly pancreatitis, the fat in his blood and he is overweight.
He had said I could care for him at home if I learned to do the sub-q fluids this time but I wasn't sure I wanted to risk that this time. Also there was a concern that it might be lymphoma. That is a good idea that I learn to do it at home and keep some on hand. I had just asked the vet if I needed to bring him in right away the next time since it started in the middle of the night this time. He said it could probably wait until morning unless it was expremely painful (which so far thank God, it has not). But that would make me feel better if I could start some treatment right away. Thanks again for the suggestion.
