Why do toasters always have a setting that burns the toast to a
horrible crisp, which no decent human being would eat?

OMG that is exactly what my toaster does! You can leave it one just one setting, sometimes it does it OK, others it's hardly done at all, and others it's as black as charcoal! Electrical appliances and me do not get on
