Wow, lots of info there. That's scary stuff, especially about the serial killer using a baby's cry to coax women from their homes .

That baby thing IS scary, Zara. But it plays on women's emotions and maternal instincts. The woman it happened to was very wise in calling the police. Who KNOWS what would've happened had she opened the door.

Another thing I learned while I was in the Auxiliary State Police is when you walk to your car, keep your keys in your fist with the key part exposed. If anyone is going to attack you, gouge at their eyes, thighs, groin area, ANYTHING that'll stop a predator in his tracks to help YOU get away.

Above all...always ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings!!

    EEK!

I doubt I would open the door for a crying baby anyways, but I'm glad to know that! I'll pass it along to my mom and sister too!

    Thank you Wolf_Q!

Donna, a lot of those safety tips I think can apply to anyone alone. A man can also be a target of a robbery or an assault.

    Donna,
I am all for safety, and common sense...but, that thing about the crying baby is a hoax. Check out www.snopes.com, and type in 'crying baby'.

Wondered about the crying baby thing.

Another "safety" tip, this from a self-defense book I worked on. Striking someone as hard as you can with the heel of your hand, instead of a fist, is more likely to hurt them, but not you. Lots of small bones and complicated nerves and tendons in your hand, whereas the heel of your hand is back up by the two much larger, stronger bones of your forearm.

Thanks, Cataholic, you beat me to the snopes link.

If you're in knife fighting range, (as in closer than you'd like to be), and cannot escape, use your knees. You have far more strength in your legs than you do in your arms, and your knees are close to an attacker's groin, which is almost an instantaneous disabling blow. Also, if you swing with your arms, the attacker can easily grab your arms and immobilize you. There is no such thing as a fair fight.

Thanks Donna some of that stuff i had no idea about, but it all makes sense doesn't it? when i go for my early morning walk i always carry my keys that way, so that i have a key between each finger, i also wear this punk type bracelet melissa bought at our two dollar shop, it has spikes sticking out of it, i thought to myself very good for defence.

Thank you for all those tips. While I hope that I am never in such a situation, it can happen to anybody. Those tips are great and I will be sure to pass them on.

Wow. I NEVER follow those safety rules! I know karate, and I'm pretty good too. I also have a very good bite. I read in a magaizine about a rapist tried attacking a girl that was walking home from school, but she was a black belt so she kicked him super hard and ran away. The kick broke the guy's leg so he couldn't follow her.

Wow! I guess I should praise my mom for being paranoid lol. She's always worrying about my sis and I doing a lot of stuff such as myspace. I don't give out personal info on there anyways, I never have. I'm starting to turn into her now with a lot of stuff because it seems my mom has had a lot of experiences with creepy people, and once it might have been Ted Bundy as well(the car was identical to his I think or something). It's terrifying to see and hear what people will do to people.
