Yes, I shop online, bank online, check my credit card online and pay bills online and I have never had a problem.
There are security features you can check for to make sure the page you are on is secure. The most obvious ones are - if you use Internet Explorer - the little lock in the right hand corner of the screen. It only shows up on secure pages. The other most obvious is the address of the page you're on. http:// is the normal website protocol. https:// is the secure form of http:// So if you are ever in doubt, look for the "s" after the http and/or the lock in the right hand corner.
Just for reference, when you use an https:// page, the data is encrypted before being sent so if someone were to intercept it, they would need to be able to decrpyt it before getting things like your SSN & account numbers.
SSL (Secure Socket Layers) is another security feature, but now we're getting in a little deeper than the normal internet user. Can you tell I just finished a class on Internet Security?
