I had a golden for 14 years. I have a mutt now and if I want her to walk beside me I take her to a no where place - no people or dogs around. I take off her leash and bring food - I make sure she has not eaten lately - she must be hungry- I ask her to stay with momma and reprimand her if she does not listen. If she does not listen more than once I end the walk and take her home.
It sounds mean but it works. She loves to go for walks and if it ends and she has to get back in the truck and go home she is really heartbroken plus she is not given food treats. It Works.
