as requested (see July 19, 2003 dog of the day)....
Gizmo is not a good look-out dog.
We always suspected that Gizmo (dashund) and Kaiya (spitz mix) would "buddy up" and get into mischief together, but it has never been proven until the other night..
We just finished eating turkey leftovers, and me and my full belly are lounging on the sofa, watching my favorite must-see TV show. My hubby was upstairs on the computer. I start hearing the rattle of dog tags.
I look of to the kitchen, and I can see Gizmo's little tush, and she
is facing the kitchen. Gizmo is still, but I hear Kaiya's tags. Gizmo
seems very intent on watching. As I keep watching from the corner of my eye, Gizmo glances over at me every now and then to see if I am paying attention. Since she doesn't notice me looking, she goes back to watching Kaiya do whatever. She is one FOCUSED PUP!!!
So, now I really need to see what is so great that Gizmo is trying to be lookout, and Kaiya is paying me no mind.
I tiptoe over to the kitchen. DARN!!! The floorboard creaked. I
stopped. The dogs didn't hear me! That is strange. Now I am standing beside Gizmo, both of us watching Kaiya. Gizmo finally recognizes me and "pounce, pounce, pounce" she starts ouncing all over the place, trying to alert Kaiya.
Kaiya is still focused.
I see Kaiya standing on her hind quarters, her 2 front paws on my
kitchen counter, strained neck w/ teeth bared... trying, streching,
working so hard to get that turkey off the counter!!! The turkey was about 1 1/2 inches away from her nose, and man, was she STRAINING to reach it.
Kaiya is so intent on this task, that she doesn't hear me walk right up behind her. Now my body is phsyically touching hers. (Kaiya's head comes up mid-chest on me when she is standing). I can feel kaiya's fur on my skin.....
.....and Kaiya STILL doesn't sense me, and tries for that turkey....
I probably should have scolded her, but it was all I could do not to
laugh at her and Gizmo trying to be lookout, so instead, I clear my throat "AHEM!"
Kaiya freezes. Front paws still on the kitchen counter. She looks up. We are staring at each other, nose-to-nose at this point.
One paw slowly comes off the counter. But she still doesn't know if she should get down, and you can see her contemplating "do you think if I stay here, mom will just let me continue??"
Then I say "Kaiya, what do you think you are doing?" (trying my
darndest not to laugh and talk to her in a stern voice)
And now that she realizes the jig is up, she very, very, s-l-o-w-l-y
lets her second paw off the counter, having it rub against the front of the cabinets all the way down.
Now, I know that a "good mommy" who would not reward the little ones for such bad deeds wouldn't do this, but I appreciated the laugh so much, that both Gizmo and Kaiya got some turkey and gravy mixed in w/ their dinner!!!!
