lol, one reason i've heard for hypenating a name is to 'keep in touch with your family name...'
My grandmother was writing a check to me after I got married as a wedding present and asked me what my full name was. When I told her that my name was Gwendolyn Lerah "Married Name" she got very upset that I didn't keep my Maiden name as my middle name or hypenate it. She said, and I quote, "It's like you are abandoning your family!"
