There may have been some things you could have done differently, but blame, if there is any, should go to the people who left your kitties homeless in the first place. You are an angel. When this crisis passes, and I heartfully hope with a happy resolution, then take a break, enjoy the spring and do something for yourself. Helping a rescue organization sounds like a wonderful idea.
