Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but it is sort of like keeping your hair in braid, like some African American kids get cornrows every summer, you just wash it where it is, so the shampoo goes on, massaged in to the roots and around, and then get rinsed off. With Caucasian hair, it takes somewhat more maintenance, it's not exactly braiding but twisting and weaving, and some product, and it does get a little "fuzzier" after time than some African hair textures. I would not have the patience for dreadlocks, myself, and even a simple braid I tend to undo before even the end of the day if it hasn't already fallen out on its own.
